This is a new Unibody MacBook Pro 15" glass cover that protects the LED screen. If your screen is cracked from impact, scratched, or hazy from wear, but the picture is still visible, only the outer glass needs to be replaced. Then the glass is all you need.
Apple does NOT sell this glass nor do any glass replacement. They want you to buy a whole new top cover as a single unit. Why buy the full assembly when the glass is all that's needed?
Watch out for some vendors selling plastic replacement screens. This screen cover is made OEM from glass, just like your original.
